The Christian’s Secret to a Happy Life (Hannah Whitall Smith)

This is not a book I would have picked up if Richard Foster had not recommended it. I had not heard of Hannah Whitall Smith, and the title sounded suspect to me. But it has turned out to be one of the most encouraging and helpful books I have ever read. The margins on my copy are filled with asterisks and notations! Smith has a knack for combining illustrations and stories with deep spiritual truth. The book is at once both practical and profound. Smith has opened up for me whole new ways of looking at obedience, faith, and temptation. What struck me most was how joyful and hopeful the Christian life could, and should, be. I recommend it for anyone who wants to find more joy in the Christian life.
